MOSS Taxonomy Management

by Andy on June 18th, 2008

I’m currently working on implementing a Taxonomy Management tool in MOSS 2007 as this is a requirement of my current client. I thought I’d share two of my preferred offerings; one if free, the other not!

Rapid for SharePoint by Artemis - Artemis offer a free Community and free limited Business edition. Check it out here: http://www.rapid-for-sharepoint.com/free-sharepoint-taxonomy.htm

SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension for Microsoft SharePoint – This enables documents and list items in a SharePoint-based portal to be organized cross-site as part of a connected content network and knowledge model. It’s not free but I believe that it’s good value at €950 (Euro) for 1 Single Server License (as at 18th June 2008) and should satisfy the functional requirements (and pockets of) most SME’s. Check it out here: http://www.sharepartxxl.com/products/taxonomy/default.aspx

Currently we’re swaying more towards SharePartXXL Taxonomy Extension for Microsoft SharePoint…….I’ll be installing an evaluation copy today and intend to post my findings soon thereafter.

Firefox 3 on Vista 64 bit (+ Server 2008 32 bit)

by Andy on June 18th, 2008

I’m proud (and not shy) to say that I’m quite the advocate for Microsoft Technologies, but I must, of course, have an appreciation for other software provider’s offerings so that I can justify best practice and proposed solutions to my clients. So today I downloaded Firefox 3!

Previous versions of Firefox would not work for me as I’m a 64 bit Vista (Ultimate) user thus I was keen to learn if version 3 would be 64 bit compatible……and it is! I’ll be testing this against MOSS 2007 later this week and will post my findings not long after.

Oh, and Firefox 3 also works quite nicely on my 32 bit Windows Server 2008 (standard) virtual machine. Not to sure about 64 bit W2K8 yet but I assume it should work also (?)

Grab Firefox 3 from here - http://mozilla.com/firefox

Windows Server 2008 Missing Disk Cleanup (and introducing ‘Desktop Experience’)

by Andy on June 17th, 2008

Ever wondered why you can’t find Disk Cleanup on Windows Server 2008? This is because this feature is not installed by default.

The solution is to install a feature called ‘Desktop Experience’. Using Server Manager, choose Add Feature, then select Desktop Experience. (Desktop Experience will also install Windows Media Player, Windows Sidebar and Photo Gallery).

After installing ‘Desktop Experience’ you might find the Vista Theme missing. To enable this you’ll need to start the ‘Themes’ Service (Run > services.msc)

Something else worth noting from Mark Harrison’s blog is that he found on a Windows Server 2008 VM he couldn’t :
- Save directly from Word into a SharePoint Document Library
- “View in Windows Explorer” the SharePoint Document Library

He notes that the normal solution is to start the “Web Client” service to enable WebDAV but the service was missing. Solution was to install the “Desktop Experience” feature.

Here’s the article: http://markharrison.co.uk/blog/2008/03/windows-server-2008-desktop-experience.htm

How to create a ‘Slipstream’ installation for MOSS with SP1

by Andy on June 17th, 2008

If like me, you could not install MOSS on Windows Server 2008 without SP1 then here’s an excellent blog from Martin Kearn which explains how to do this: http://blogs.msdn.com/martinkearn/archive/2008/01/14/how-to-create-a-slipstream-installation-for-moss-with-sp1.aspx

…….or you can now download MOSS 2007 with SP1 (Slipstream) OfficeServerwithSP1.exe from here:

Issues Installing Virtual PC 2007 SP1

by Andy on June 5th, 2008

Upon attempt to install Service Pack 1 for Virtual PC 2007 on my Vista 64bit host, I experience an issue with an open process (Process ID: 3800 in my case) which prevented installation. This could not complete until I had terminated this process (even ‘ignore’ or reboot couldn’t bypass the issue).

As the process was not listed in Task Manager I downloaded Process Explorer by Sysinternals (now branded as Microsoft Sysinternals) and found that the process in question was Windows Explorer. Killing this process resulted in loosing my Vista Taskbar, however Alt+Tab allowed me to switch back into the SP1 installer and continue to completion. Reboot upon completion and I was back in business.

iFilters for MOSS 2007

by Andy on June 4th, 2008

Would your end customer like to include document formats, other than the Office ones, in the MOSS search functionality? If so, to enable this you’ll probably need to add some additional iFilters. In my experience the most requested iFilter for SharePoint 2003 was Adobe PDF iFilter as this would enable PDF’s to be included in the search results as well as to get crawled (here’s my blog on adding the PDF iFilter in MOSS)

Well, did you know about the ‘Microsoft Filter Pack’ which can be applied to SharePoint Server 2007? See here for details on how to download and deploy these to your MOSS deployment. iFilters included in this pack are:

Docm - Already added
Docx - Already added
Pptm - Already added
Pptx - Already added
Xlsm - Already added
Xlsx - Already added
Xlsb - New
Zip  - New
One - New
Vsd - Already added
Vss - Already added
Vst - Already added
Vdx - Already added
Vsx - Already added
Vtx - Already added

You may also like CiteKnet’s free iFilter offerings here. These iFilters are great for indexing content such as .CAB, .RAR and .CHM’s to name a few.
