Firefox 3 on Vista 64 bit (+ Server 2008 32 bit)

by Andy on June 18th, 2008

I’m proud (and not shy) to say that I’m quite the advocate for Microsoft Technologies, but I must, of course, have an appreciation for other software provider’s offerings so that I can justify best practice and proposed solutions to my clients. So today I downloaded Firefox 3!

Previous versions of Firefox would not work for me as I’m a 64 bit Vista (Ultimate) user thus I was keen to learn if version 3 would be 64 bit compatible……and it is! I’ll be testing this against MOSS 2007 later this week and will post my findings not long after.

Oh, and Firefox 3 also works quite nicely on my 32 bit Windows Server 2008 (standard) virtual machine. Not to sure about 64 bit W2K8 yet but I assume it should work also (?)

Issues Installing Virtual PC 2007 SP1

by Andy on June 5th, 2008

Upon attempt to install Service Pack 1 for Virtual PC 2007 on my Vista 64bit host, I experience an issue with an open process (Process ID: 3800 in my case) which prevented installation. This could not complete until I had terminated this process (even ‘ignore’ or reboot couldn’t bypass the issue).

As the process was not listed in Task Manager I downloaded Process Explorer by Sysinternals (now branded as Microsoft Sysinternals) and found that the process in question was Windows Explorer. Killing this process resulted in loosing my Vista Taskbar, however Alt+Tab allowed me to switch back into the SP1 installer and continue to completion. Reboot upon completion and I was back in business.
